It's a New Century - bus bathroom breeding ground for political debate

Would you ever imagine spending more than absolutely necessary in the Chinatown Bus bathroom (or any bus bathroom for that matter)? I did and even took photos!

Happy Labor Day, from the "Red China-ists"

DC Classic: Columbia Road

I love this corner building (Columbia Road and Ontario Rd NW maybe). It seems like a great spot for a big party, and is also host to many neat wheat-pastes!

Oh Funeral Directors, Don't be crazy!

From a recent crab hunt in Annapolis: it's not hand painted... but it is a sign... and noteworthy for sure.

Corporate Street Art?

This is a work by Tom Conlon, an employee of Critical Massive(?) in Brooklyn. It doesn't seem to be google-able, but the artist explained that he'd been working on hand painting a number of street signs in the area promoting this tv show. Its a nation-wide campaign and he was working with a reference photo. The space (rented) is on 18th street NW in Adams Morgan and was painted earlier with an ad for the show Children's Hospital.

This reminds me of the Coca-Cola ads painted on buildings in South America, but its something relatively new that I've seen here in D.C.

That's my Street Sign!

Thank you thank you DMZ for putting up my mermaid sticker in the metropolis of TORONTO and for always supporting Street Signs OF OUR LIVES!!!

I was inspired by BYPO's ProHoMo campaign to make this sticker, and what better ProHomo spot than Toronto.

Dear Georgia Ave Hair-Braiding Establishment

Dear Georgia Ave Hair-braiding Establishment,

I like your hand painted sign. It is a wonderful contribution to a long history of painted barber's signs around the world. I hope you can finish it soon, although I know that's sometimes the hardest part.

The Very Geleivable Chairman Mao

I wish I could provide better context for this nationalist mural that is near a friends apartment in Beijing. i don't read Chinese, nor do I know if it is old or new... but I think you get the idea!

p.s. geleivable isn't a typo -- it's chingrish to mean something like charismatic

Disculpa, no puedo explicar mejor el contexto del mural que queda por el depa de un amigo en Beijing. No leo chino, y tampoco se si sea nueva o antigua... pero creo que la tema se entiende en todo caso.

Muuuney baby muuuney

Hanging out with JoJO always yields unanticipated fruits ...
When the Mothersheister and I got a tiny-bit-but-not-really-lost on the way from JFK to her apartment in Brooklyn (after almost 24 hours of traveling from Hong Kong to DC) we came across this really exceptional mural. I love this money baby!
It is signed, but I was in a daaaze a the moment I took this photo. I'll find the author and update y'all!

Street Signs in Progress: BYPO

You might not recognize these hands, but you should recognize the tag! I caught up with BYPO at a fundraiser in Mt. Pleasant, D.C. a couple weeks ago and saw some new wheat paste BYPO was working on. Among the themes: summer love!

ET and his fish friends

This is an image that has, for a long time, been present in my subconscious. It comes from the village of Hamburg, outside of Buffalo, NY. And no ... I've never quite understood the connection between ET and exotic fish(they're both other worldy?), but I've always loved the mural.

so CUTE lol

This is one of those street sign success stories. My compadre stopped and took a picture of it in DF de Mexico because of the painting, I assume. But then our worlds were opened up to a plethora of adorable personalized pillowcases, coffee mugs, stickers, and more.
Please check out this picture, and feel free to visit the URL featured in the mural.

Hello, Shanghai

From Shanghai, two VIDEOS and some photos of graffiti artists outside the 50 Moganshan (I THINK, we went to a few) art district. This is a street officially open to graffiti artists, but I'm not sure if there is any government control over the images or who can participate. There isn't much graffiti or street art in China. I'm not sure what the penalties are for illegal grafs or tags, but considering the level of censorship the government extols over blogs, social media, and other forms of personal expression I'd imagine it's high.

Due to the my "language barrier" or inability to talk about anything in Mandarin apart from " I like" "I don't like" and "it's spicy," I didn't really understand what these two guys tags are. They were really nice though and did agree to let me film them. Unfortunately, they can't get on the blog from China, so I guess we'll never know their identities:(

Anyway the images are niiice and plentiful, so Enjoy!

Barranco is known for its graffitis and bohemian murals. What you see is not really an example :)

Also I AM GONNA BE OUT OF TOWN, so I will try to update my blog from friends' houses, but check back with me on May 18th for sure!

No voy a estar. Intentaré actualizar mi blog mientras, pero de todos maneras estaré de neuvo empezando el 18 de Mayo.

NEBSI and Katya Miranda at Marx Cafe

Last night I was at Marx Cafe Bohemian Night. NEBCSI, an awesome and multi-talented local lady was presenting her drawings, graffitis, and tattoo art. Look for her grafs in the District of Columbia! Y Gracias por el gorro precioso!

Katya Miranda, printmaker, was also there with a selection of her work. You should definitely check out more of her stuff at the Salvadorian consulate on Friday (April 15).

Congratulations to these ladies and look out for a comic night to come soon!
